Unfortunately all of the firemen in my town are men. There are no women on the squad - but they are always looking for a few good women!!
Anyways, along with my weekly academy I get to go on ride-outs with the squad. I've been on two already. Quite interesting. It is a small adrenaline rush to drive through town on the back of a fire engine with the lights and sirens going!!
"Move to the Right for Sirens and Lights!!"
I've been amazed at how many people do not get out of the way for emergency vehicles. Here are a few shots I took with my point and shoot on Friday night. We had two calls, but I wasn't allowed to take photos there.
They eat well!! The firemen cook every meal - and they have to pay for their own food while on duty. We've had crayfish, spaghetti and home made meatballs, and pork loin on the evenings I've been there. YUM. I brought Texas Brownies and Blue Bell Ice Cream for dessert!
Every engine has a working bell.
The engine that I've ridden on each time. State of the art equipment.
Changing the bay 1 light bulb at 9:00 at night.
They keep the station absolutely spotless!! They mop all the time. The equipment/trucks are always shiny and bright. After every run they bring them back and wash them down. Then, they mop the floor around and under the equipment. They even change the light bulbs as soon they burn out - even if it is 9:00 at night!
I am looking forward to helping the fire department as a volunteer when I finish my CFA class. I will take photos for the department at all structure fires and major vehicle accidents that require extrication. A great way for me to use a passion for good.
